The impact of abuse doesn’t stop when the crisis is over, yet that is when most specialist support ends. Abuse survivors face many difficulties in rebuilding their lives—ranging from practical issues to overcoming trauma and avoiding re-victimisation—but most support finishes after the crisis stops due to funding and resource limitations.
Our clients tell us that family and friends often think that once the abuse is over, they should be able to get on with their lives. They do not understand the deep emotional scars that abuse leaves and the impact on confidence and motivation. Also, some professionals fail to understand that a new home or a perpetrator’s criminal conviction, where that happens, is not the end of the issue, but the start of a long journey to a new life. Living in Breckland which is a large rural district means that survivors can also face the added challenges of social isolation, scarcity of services and barriers to transport.
From supporting families over the last ten years, we’ve learned how important it is to integrate therapy, advice, confidence-building, and personal growth for real, long-lasting recovery. We are unique because we work with people from point of crisis to helping people heal from trauma over the long term. We look at the whole person, not just one part of their experience.
Our service includes six main parts that survivors say help them the most:
· Personal Support Plans made together with each family, respecting that clients know their own situation best.
· A whole family service with therapeutic support for children and young people, plus parenting support and group activities.
· Counselling and therapy from specialist, qualified therapists for adult survivors.
· Personal named supporters for each client throughout their support journey
· Psycho-educational programmes using evidence-based, accredited courses, run by trained facilitators to build strengths and confidence.
· Peer support led by ex-service users.
· Creative, social, and group activities that give people a chance to recharge and feel part of a like-minded community.
We believe in helping people recover from trauma in a way that’s friendly, supportive, and flexible. By focusing on real connections and making our services easy to access, we build trust and keep people motivated. Since we started, we’ve become a key part of the community, helping over 3,000 people take positive steps forward in their lives.
