Menopause Research and Education Fund

Menopause Research and Education Fund

The Menopause Research and Education Fund (MREF) is a Charity with a simple aim – to improve the health of all those who go through menopause, now and in the future.

Why do we need this?

  • Women spend 25% more time in poor health post menopause than men
  • 1 in 10 women say they have quit jobs, reduced hours, changed jobs or considered these things because of their symptoms. This affects their earnings and costs the economy and estimated £1.5bn
  • Women's health research is chronically underfunded. Just 2% of funds goes on women's health research and only 0.3% on menopause related research, even though the silent changes that contibute to the conditions that affect our health later on - dementia, osteoporosis, heart disease, auto-immune diseases and depression, often start in menopause.
  • Women are under-represented in studies on the conditions that affect us dispropotionately more than men - we're lucky if we make up 40% of study participants.

These things need to change. We are lobbying to make that happen and to support research directly ourselves.

We are the only charity that focuses on supporting research as well as education.

We need research to find out what works best to improve symptoms and our long term health, and we need to have access to the best evidence-based education and information at hand. Most doctors have not received more than a few hours of education for on menopause and as a result women are not getting the help they need or are having to wait far too long for an appointment with a specialist.

We have educated more than 1000 doctors and allied healthcare professionals over the past two years with two CPD accredited courses a year.

Women often turn to social media where the information given can sometimes be misleading or inaccurate. We provide regular interviews with experts, live chats where we answer questions and fact sheets for all those who are looking for evidence-based information.

With you’re help we can do more to ensure research is carried out and we get the answers needed to improve women's immediate and long term health.
