My Story

In August 2019 my grandad Terry Fretwell suffered a ruptured Abdominal Aorta Aneurysm which resulted in him being rushed to Addenbrookes Hospital for emergency surgery. During his recovery he unfortunately developed sepsis. By December 2019 my grandad was transferred to Arthur Rank Hospice in Cambridge where he received end of life care. The entire team at Arthur Rank made his time there so memorable. We were able to celebrate Christmas Day as a family, spend countless hours watching old cowboy films and spend lovely winter afternoons in the garden. On April 17th 2021 after a brave battle with sepsis my grandad passed peacefully in his home surrounded by his family and supported by the Arthur Rank Community Team. My family and I will forever be grateful for the support and care given by the Arthur Rank team, this is why I will be running the London Marathon for Arthur Rank in memory of my grandad.

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Our ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families.

We care for around 3,800 patients each year at our Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

It will cost £14 million in 2025/2026 to run our services. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £8.1 million, meaning that £5.9 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. We are extremely grateful to our local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting us to meet this target.
