Emily McElhinney
My Story
I am running 2026 London Marathon to run in memory of my wonderful dad, James McElhinney and to support The Fire Fighters Charity.
Both of my parents dedicated decades of service to Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service. My dad served for 40 years as a firefighter and my mum worked for 30 years in fire control. Growing up, the fire service was a huge part of my life, We spent many days at the Exeter headquarters including a memorable Christmas Day when my mum was on duty.
In April 2021 my Dad was diagnosed with Myeloma, a form of blood cancer. My mum retired from the service to be Dad’s carer and support him. Unfortunately there is no cure to Myeloma. As Dad’s mobility declined in early 2025, mum contacted the Firefighters Charity who offered them physiotherapy and respite. Sadly, it was too late for dad to regain any mobility and in April 2025 he passed away due to complications with his cancer. Poignantly, on the 27th April - the date on the day of the 2025 London Marathon.
I would love nothing more than to raise awareness for all of the support that the charity can provide and support the community that Dad loved so much.
