My Story
In May of last year my dad spent his final few days at St Helena Hospice. Prior to this dad was supported at home and visited the IPU for symptom control. Whilst there he was so well looked after, even getting to meet a guinea pig and a lamb that went running through his room! It was after going in for symptom control that my dad decided that he wanted to be at the hospice when he died.
Unforunately, that time came a lot sooner than any of us thought, but the hospice couldn't have been any more amazing. Me, my mum and my sister barely left the hospice for the days he was there and it was never a problem to anyone. It became a home away from home! When dad died the nurses couldn't have been more compassionate or kind, they really were there for us as much as they were for my dad.
It's not until you've experienced the support of the hospice first-hand that you realise how truly amazing it is and I'm glad me and my family, and most importantly, my dad, got to receive the care, kindness and support when we needed it.
I know that if my dad was here he would want to say thank you to the hospice for looking after him, but more importantly to my dad, for looking after us. So I decided to run the London Marathon to raise money for St Helena Hospice to say thank you from all of us and so other families can receive the care that we did.
I will get over that finish line one way or another but a £1 (or £2) would certainly help!
