My Story
About us
I can't decide whether I'm more excited or daunted at the prospect of running the London Marathon on behalf of Earthwatch Europe, but what an honour and an opportunity!
I've been a keen long distance runner for 15 years. It's great for health and fitness of course, but than anything it's a different way of being. I particularly love running on Dartmoor, my local stamping ground, where I can follow rivers to their sources and lonely paths through heath, around bogs and over tors. It's one of the best ways to get away from the hassle of a computer screen, hear nothing but wind and birdsong and feel part of nature. I learn something about a new corner of this awesome place each time I stumble and squelch my way across it.
Most of us live in cities though, and this is the environment where we spend most of our time. Greening our cities is one the of the biggest and most crucial challenges of the next few years. It's not just about improving air quality and reducing risks from flooding and pollution. Greener cities can improve our sense of wellbing, our connectedness to where we live, even our productivity at work. Greening our cities is a huge part of what Earthwatch does, and that's why I'm so keen to support this amazing charity.
Running through busy London is going to be a very different experience from Dartmoor. Just as exciting equally varied, every bit as challenging. It'll be worth all the aching muscles, sore knees and blistered feet, because the cause is such a critical one. Six months to go and my training starts now. I can't wait!
