My Story

Following my head injury when I was 19 I explored what support might have been available to me if I had not recovered as well as I did. That is when I discovered learning disability nursing. I began my learning disability nurse training in 1999 and have never looked back.

I have dedicated my life to improving the lives of people with learning disabilities. Today, I do this through providing high quality social care to people with learning disabilities and complex needs through PBS4, and promoting learning disability nurses and neuroscience nurses through the Royal College of Nursing.

I took up running properly 6 years ago. I've applied continuously for ballot places at the London Marathon with no luck. This year I have decided that I am determined to do it in April 2026 and I am honoured to have been given a place to do this to raise funds for Mencap. Mencap do exceptional work raising the profile of people with learning disabilities and amplifying their voices for equity and equality. They have run amazing campaigns through my career, such as "death by indifference" and "Do you see me?". Please support Mencap and my London Marathon run for them by making a generous donation to enable the great work of this charity to continue.

Right now, people with a learning disability face inequalities in every area of life with almost 1 in 3 young people with a learning disability spending less than 1 hour outside their home on a typical Saturday.

They face barriers finding a job, accessing activities in their local community and receiving good quality healthcare. We tackle these issues head on by providing support in a way that meets individual needs and encourages greater independence.

We give expert advice and information that empowers people and their families. And we campaign relentlessly for changes that brings greater equality for people with a learning disability.

By supporting Team Mencap you will be helping us to support people with a learning disability to live the life they choose, and do the things they love.
