London Marathon 2026 - in memory of Abbie
Katie Walford
My Story
In April 2026, I’ll be running the London Marathon for Marie Curie – in memory of my beautiful friend Abbie.
In November 2019 we lost our beautiful and beloved friend Abbie at just 22 years old. She was one of the kindest, most caring people you could ever wish to meet, someone who lit up every room she walked into. Just weeks after her cancer diagnosis, the light that was our Abbie was gone - a devastating loss to the many that loved and adored her. In her last days Abbie’s courage and warmth shone through as she left us with one last wish: to spread kindness to one another. I think about her all the time, often reflecting on the bravery she showed in those last few weeks. The strength she showed through the darkest of times inspires me every day.
Abbie asked that those attending her funeral wore something yellow. It was a way for us to celebrate her life. For those who knew her, yellow has become a symbol. A reminder of the warmth, brightness, and joy she brought into our lives. As I take my place at the start line of the London Marathon, I'll be wearing yellow in memory of our amazing friend Abbie - carrying her light with me every step of the way.
Every five minutes, someone dies without the end-of-life care they need. Marie Curie is working to change that - and so am I. If you’re able to, please consider supporting my fundraising. Every donation will help Marie Curie be there for more families through the hardest times – offering care, comfort, and compassion when it’s truly needed.
Your support will also help me honour my wonderful friend Abbie by continuing her legacy of spreading kindness when it matters most.
Thank you,
