Kim's London marathon challenge 2026
Kim Burns
My Story
In July 2025 I celebrated working for the NHS for 30 years. Inspired by watching the London marathon in the April and knowing that 2026 is the year I turn 50 - I offered (as a non-runner) to complete the London Marathon and raise money for WISHH, the charity supporting our local hospitals.
I was very fortunate to be offered a place and am now in training for the BIG day!
My fundraising is to support areas within the trust which are close to my heart:
MND Service - My Inspirational Uncle has Motor Neurone Disease and is well supported by the MND Service at the trust.
Robotic Surgery - My paternal Uncle (who we sadly lost on 30th September) battled Prostate cancer. At Castle Hill Hospital, we are privileged to have robotic surgery and I know a few friends who have had successful treatment. Robotic surgery, which is also used for other specialties, is less invasive, meaning a shorter hospital stay and hopefully a quicker recovery.
I am hoping fundraising for these two areas will allow for items to enhance the patients experience that are not afforded by the NHS alone. I am in contact with the teams for what would be beneficial.
Major Trauma - One of the care groups I work with in my role as an Accountant. We opened a new dedicated ward in January 2025 - but there are no windows! Hoping that fundraising will allow for some themed sky lights to brighten the day for severely injured patients in the early days of recovery
WISHH stands for Working Independently to Support Hull Hospitals. We fundraise to compliment and enrich the services and facilities at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital, over and above what can be achieved by the NHS alone, for the benefit of patients, their loved ones, visitors and staff.
Hull Hospitals serve a population of 600,000, which increases to approximately 1.25m for a range of specialist services. Over 1 million patients receive care each year.
Working in partnership with Hull Hospitals, we enhance the patient experience and give the comfort and wellbeing of patients and their families the attention of their medical needs, helping make a real difference.
