My Story

Back in March 2017 our family lost a huge part of lives. My Grandad Tom. Anyone who knew Tom would tell you how he lit up any room he was in with his bright Hawaiian shirts and endless jokes. Suddenly and cruelly we lost him a day before his 74th birthday from a cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrests give no time to say goodbye and there are more than 30,000 of them out-of-hospital each year… the survival rate less than 1 in 10.

In 2021 I lost my other Grandad Peter from covid. This however was the second time I’d lost my Grandad. Before this he was being cared for after a stroke. The most selfless and loving man again taken so suddenly. Strokes cause around 34,000 deaths each year and are the biggest cause for severe disability in the UK. For my Grandad Peter this meant physical effects that also meant whilst I could talk to him, he could never answer me back again.

In the UK there are around 100,000 hospital admissions for heart attacks each year… that’s one every five minutes. In 2023 my mum Tracy became one of these people after she had to be taken into hospital by ambulance whilst suffering severe chest pains. We then found out my mum had in fact had a heart attack a couple of weeks before her birthday. She spent a week in the cardiac ward and discovered she was left with ischaemic heart disease. Ischaemic heart disease is the most common cause of heart attack and is the biggest killer of both men and women worldwide. It’s also the biggest premature killer in the UK (before the age of 75). My nan also had a heart attack just months after my mum. Luckily she was treated quickly and is back to walking and recovering.

In the end I thought what do I love most. The answer was running. It was always my dream to run the London Marathon and as my Grandad Tom would say ‘up here for thinking, down there for dancing’. What better way to achieve my dream than to do it in honour of my Grandads and to help the fight against heart and circulatory conditions that have hurt our family so much. And along the way I’m raising money for the British Heart Foundation. A charity very close to our family and every mile will help us in the fight against heart and circulatory conditions.

See you soon London ❤️🏃‍♀️
