My Story
My story :
I was diagnosed over 15 years ago with chronic kidney disease (CKD) following a chest infection.
My kidneys were stable for years with a percentage of around 48%.
2021 hit and I was hospitalised for a month with sepsis pneumonia and covid. I ended up in ICU with my kidneys working at 8% and put on dialysis during this time.
I was told they thought my kidneys would not recover and I would be looking at long term dialysis and a transplant.
I came out of hospital after a month with my kidneys at 11% and told I would need a kidney transplant.
All the tests for a transplant were done and I was to wait for a call for a suitable kidney as I didn’t have a match.
During this time I started to look after myself more , continued a healthy plant-based diet and began working out. My kidneys rose to 17%.
2023 and I was back in hospital this time with my a problem with my heart caused by an infection. and my kidney percentage dropped back down to 11%
I continued to be on the transplant list. I continued to workout and try to have a healthy lifestyle and my kidneys rose again to 21%. At this point I was taken off the transplant list.
Today my kidneys are currently at 19% with 4. Monthly check ups.
We don’t know what the future will hold in terms of my kidneys and it is extremely likely I will go back on the transplant list If my kidney percentage falls below 17% and the wait will start again.
I am doing the marathon to raise awareness of kidney disease and transplants in the hope that more people will consider coming forward to be living donors.
Black and ethnic minorities face a significantly longer wait for a transplant due to a lack of donors in the black community.
People from Black and ethnic minorities are also 5 x more common to develop kidney failure and wait over 2.5 years for a transplant.
