My Story
In 2022 I lost my Grandma to Dementia. She'd battled with it since around 2018. It all started with forgotten birthdays, repetitive conversations and the like, before progressing to doubling up on Christmas cards, forgetting things she'd never have forgotten and going round in circles several times in a conversation.
Covid hit and isolating meant she could no longer go to bingo or shopping trips that had been her life line, and things got worse, fast.
It was as if her brain just shut down and it got to the point where she was admitted to hospital with Covid and my Grandad, who’d been caring for her at home finally agreed it would be best to move her somewhere where she could get round the clock care. He and I moved her into a care home in March 2022, and a few short months and a few falls and mini-strokes later, she passed away peacefully.
Dementia UK was a great source of information for us as a family as we navigated Grandma’s condition and I want to do what I can to help them support other families navigating what we did. I’m undertaking my biggest challenge yet - running the London Marathon 2026 and would love you to join me on my mission!
My target is £2500 which altogether would fund 100 carers like my Grandad to receive an hour of one to one support on the phone from one of the Dementia UK Admiral nurses. How amazing is that?! Let’s do this!
