My Story
I am proud to be running the 2026 TCS London Marathon with Young Lives vs Cancer to ensure no child faces cancer alone.
On 15th September 2015, at two years old, my cousin’s little girl, Abi Barkle was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia. Although treatable, Abi will never be ‘cured’. ‘Young Lives’ has always been a charity close to our family’s hearts, as it has helped Abi lead the most normal life she can, whilst navigating her diagnosis. For ten years, the charity has, and continues to support her and our family. Abi is a truly wonderful young lady. She has achieved so much regardless of all her treatments and everything she has had to overcome.
Taekwon-Do is a huge part of Abi’s life. She has gained so many achievements through her love of the sport, proving with grit and determination anything is possible! Abi was the longest treated, child cancer patient in Gloucestershire, and on the last day of that treatment she managed to win gold at the Global Taekeon-Do UK (GTUK), Championships!! She has also represented GTUK England at International tournaments in the Netherlands and Belgium. Abi’s other love was football, playing for Gloucester City, but as a consequence of 8 years’ cancer treatment she was diagnosed with avascular necrosis (a hip bone condition), her season had to end prematurely, and she stopped competing in Taekwon-Do. She is still able to train due to GTUK and Mr Sumners, her coach, adapting the training for her needs.
I feel so sad that Abi is having to give up physical activities from the result of her leukaemia, especially as it really is her favourite things to be busy, active and winning!
All this, is for me is a huge motivator to move my body, because I can! Something I should never take for granted! Abi has achieved so many wonderful and difficult things, and has inspired me to do the same. Comparing to what she has managed to achieve against the odds, has really motivated me to sign up for this wonderful challenge, whilst celebrating my healthy body, and raising money for a charity that really has been an incredible support to my family.
