My Story
About us
I am fundraising for Carney’s Community, a charity me and my family have accessed and one that I know give back to, by working there as a coach. Carney’s is a Battersea based charity that exists to support all young people, but have a primary focus on supporting those who face poverty, are in the care system, impacted by knife and/or gun crime, substance misuse, domestic abuse, have been excluded or involved in the criminal justice system (participants can be self referrals and we also get direct referrals from organisations like the police, YOT, Probation, gangs team, schools etc).
Carney’s aims to reduce offending, re-offending and anti-social behaviour, whilst improving social mobility and community cohesion. They achieve this by working differently to other organisations. They have an ethos of providing long term, consistent and unconditional support, with underlying focus on their virtuous cycle (they do not charge participants for their services, but expect them to take the positive energy put into them, and pass that on to the next generation of young people).
Their core services are one to one key work, group mentoring, boxing fitness sessions, Youth work, free fit and fed meals, music and podcast production and bike maintenance programmes, whilst running two social enterprises (Carney’s Cycle’s and Carney’s coaches), which employ directly from their target group.
They believe that by empowering young people through mentoring, participation, focusing on their strengths and learning from each other, they can improve not only their opportunities, but also those of their local communities.
