My Story

About us

The London Marathon has become an annual, inspiring and colourful fixture in the world’s sporting calendar since the inaugural race on 29 March 1981: a celebration of fun, fundraising and fancy dress.

Over the years more than a million people have completed the 26.2-mile course – which runs from Blackheath to The Mall, with a spectacular finish in front of Buckingham Palace, showcasing the very best that the capital city has to offer.

What’s more, these participants have raised over a billion pounds for charity and there have been countless amazing tales of human achievement throughout the event’s history – living up to its aim of helping participants ‘to have fun, and provide some happiness and sense of achievement in a troubled world’.

The reason behind the marathon

My mam bravely battled cancer for five years, showing incredible strength, resilience, and grace every step of the way. Throughout her illness, she was supported by Hospice of the Valleys, who provided not only expert care but also genuine compassion and humanity. Their team became a source of comfort and reassurance, helping us navigate some of the most painful and uncertain moments of our lives. They treated my mam with dignity and kindness, always going above and beyond to make sure she felt safe, cared for, and never alone.

For our family, the hospice wasn’t just a service, it was a lifeline. Their support extended to all of us, offering emotional guidance and comfort at a time when we needed it most. Sadly, my mam passed away, but the memory of how she was cared for, and the respect and love she received, has stayed with us.

Running this marathon is deeply personal for me. It’s not just a race, it’s a tribute to my mam’s strength and the people who stood beside her. It’s my way of saying thank you, of giving something back to the hospice that gave us so much when we needed it most. Every mile will be run in her memory, and in support of the incredible work Hospice of the Valleys continues to do for families like mine."
