Lucy's marathon fundraiser
Running for Osh
My Story
Hello and thankyou for taking the time to read about my marathon and fundraising journey.
For those that didn't know my brilliant and courageous nephew Osian I will do my best to explain; Osian was a life loving, kind, funny and all round brilliant teenager with no previous health conditions. When he was 15 years old Osh caught covid and he developed a rare multi-inflammatory syndrome (MISC-C). He suffered a number of heart attacks and spent a long time in intensive care at a wonferful specialist hospital where, just over a year later, he recieved a heart transplant. Osian's recovery was gruelling but he did return home and was settling in to life again when his new heart rejected. He lost his young life on June 19th 2024 aged just 17.
Osian's loss has been devastating, for all of life's beautiful milestones that he misses out on and for what he means to us. On our side of his family he was the first grandchild, the first nephew and he had a closeness with his cousins that really was something special. In fact Osian's relationship with all of his cousins was truly unique. On his mums side of the family Osh had a huge family who adored him. He really was an extra child and sibling to so many of us that were blessed enough to have him in our lives. Osh was also incredibly well liked and his loss has had a huge impact on the lives of his friends and thier families. And for my brother and Osian's mum he was thier only child.
For my daughters, Osian was like a brother and loosing him has changed thier world in many ways. To experience such unthinkable and unfair loss at thier age is utterly heartbreaking.
This is where 2Wish come in. 2Wish provide free confidential support for those affected by the sudden death of a child or young person. Its thier mission to ensure that all those affected by the sudden death of a child or young person recieve the bereavement support they need and deserve. You can read more about 2Wish here - https://2wish.org.uk/
Many of our family and Osian's friends were supported by 2Wish to access counselling services. They gave us access to therapits who walked along side us and created space to be seen and heard during the worst days.
2Wish have extended thier services and they also provide therapy for people who experience child loss through thier line of work, for emergency services staff, healthcare and others. Osian was supported by a team of mighty nurses and doctors, who really felt his loss personally. He was their funniest, most determined, cheeky and resillient patient.
If your still reading, thankyou, I hope and pray you will never need to access such a service but for 2Wish to continue supporting families after child loss they rely on your incredible donations. Their work has been invaluable to us as a family and my marathon will be run as a small act of thanks to a charity that supported us when we needed it most.
For me, this marathon is about feeling connected to Osian's courage, faith and determination. If Im brutally honest running has helped me turn off the noise and really connect with my grief. It won't be an easy run, or fast, but my plan is much like learning to live without Osh, to keep moving forward. I'm hoping Osh will be running with me on April 26th in London this year, he'd be insanely proud and maybe a bit embarrassed by his aunty Luce putting in the miles in his memory.
Please, if you can, sponsor my London Marathon and 2Wish.
