My Story
Social Indepence Group - Pathways to Independence
No one should have to face the challenge of rebuilding their life entirely alone. For those struggling with homelessness and mental health challenges, the journey back to independence can feel like an uphill battle, but it is one that SIG Pathways has been helping people navigate for over 40 years.
This April, I am taking on a challenge of my own to support their vital work. I will be running both the Boston UK Marathon and the London Marathon—two full marathons in two weeks. More importantly, I'm running to ensure that the 200 single, marginalised people SIG Pathways supports each year have access to the safe housing and specialist counselling they need to move forward.
We often think of homelessness as something that happens to "other people," but the reality is that most of us are just one bad life event away from it. A relationship breakdown, the loss of a job, or a sudden mental health crisis can be enough to leave you without a roof over your head.
Having seen people in this position, I know how much a stable foundation matters. SIG Pathways doesn't just provide a roof; they provide the "Move-in Packs," the job interview transport, and the mental health support that allows someone to transition from vulnerability to a fulfilling, stable life.
If you know me, you’ll know I’m not a natural marathon runner but I’ve got a lot from pushing myself to complete each one. At first this was just trying to get through before the cut off but recently I managed my first ever sub 5. London will be my sixth and final "World Marathon Major," having already completed Tokyo, Boston, Chicago, New York, and Berlin. Saving London for my final "star" felt like the right way to mark the end of this journey, and I want to use this milestone to raise as much as possible for a good cause.
Your donation goes directly toward these essential steps:
£10 covers transport for someone to attend a life-changing job interview or medical appointment.
£25 provides materials for creative arts and crafts sessions, giving residents a space to express themselves and build confidence.
£50 funds a Move-in Pack with bedding and kitchenware, so someone can start their new chapter in comfort.
£100 provides the long-term, personalised support required to help an individual overcome the trauma of homelessness for good.
£250 - funds health and wellbeing activities, including days out to improve the mental and physical health of people recovering from homelessness.
Thank you for being part of this final "major" milestone with me. Every donation helps SIG Pathways prove that no matter how someone finds themselves on the street, there is always a path back.
