My Story
I can't quite believe I'm saying this, but yes I am running the 2026 London Marathon!!
The only thing getting me through this is doing it for this special charity. The APP do such amazing work by supporting and advocating for mums and families affected Postpartum psychosis. PP is a severe but treatable form of mental illness that begins suddenly in the days and weeks after having a baby. It can be frightening and shocking for the mum experiencing it, her partner and her family. It affects around 1 in 1,000 mothers after giving birth and some people who get PP have no previous history of mental illness.
5 years ago I was diagnosed with PP after the birth of my Son. We were in the thick of Covid and it was terrifying. Luckily I was admitted to a Mother and baby unit to start my recovery. Mother and Baby Units (MBUs) are specialist inpatient treatment units where mothers with mental illness are admitted with their babies. With the right treatment, you can make a full recovery from postpartum psychosis, but it is essential for it be diagnosed and treated as quickly as possible.
Unfortunately there are not enough MBU's around. England has 19 units, Scotland has two and Wales has one. There are currently no MBUs in North Wales or Northern Ireland. There are many parts of the country with no units. Even where there is an MBU nearby, there may not be a bed available. You may have to be admitted to a general psychiatric ward. This can be extremely traumatic for everyone involved. This is why I am raising money for such a a great cause and campaigning for more MBU's - it is essential places of care for new mums experiencing severe mental illness.
Without the MBU I wouldn't be where I am today.
Unfortunately PP is still widely undiagnosed and not heard about so please help support me and this amazing cause for Mother's all over the UK!
Follow me to see my journey, I started running in February and the furthest I've ever ran 10k once so I've got a long way to go!!
Thank you! ❤️
